As parents, ensuring our little ones' safety is a top priority, especially when it comes to sleep. At Slumber Squad, we understand the importance of safe sleeping practices and want to provide you with essential do's and don'ts for baby and toddler sleep safety. In this blog, we'll cover guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to help you create a secure sleeping environment for your child.
Do's:
Always Place Your Baby on Their Back to Sleep: The AAP recommends placing babies on their backs for every sleep, including naps and nighttime. This reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Use a Firm, Flat Sleep Surface: Place your baby on a firm, flat mattress covered by a fitted sheet. Soft surfaces, such as couches or cushions, increase the risk of suffocation and SIDS.
Keep the Crib Clear of Soft Objects: Avoid placing soft objects like pillows, stuffed toys, or loose bedding in the crib, as they pose a suffocation hazard.
Use Sleep Sacks or Wearable Blankets: Replace traditional blankets with sleep sacks or wearable blankets to keep your baby warm without the risk of suffocation.
Ensure a Safe Room Temperature: Maintain a comfortable room temperature (between 68-72°F) to prevent overheating or excessive cooling.
Establish a Consistent Bedtime Routine: A consistent, soothing bedtime routine promotes better sleep for both babies and toddlers.
Share a Room, Not a Bed: The AAP recommends sharing a room with your baby for at least the first six months, but not sharing a bed, as bed-sharing increases the risk of SIDS and suffocation.
Introduce Pillows and Blankets at the Appropriate Age: The AAP advises against using pillows and blankets for babies under 12 months. You can introduce a small, breathable pillow and a lightweight blanket for toddlers over 12 months, but ensure the blanket is tucked securely into the sides of the crib or bed to avoid covering their face.
Don'ts:
Don't Smoke Around Your Baby: Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of SIDS. Keep your home and car smoke-free.
Don't Let Your Baby Sleep in a Swing or Car Seat: Swings and car seats are not designed for routine sleep and may pose a risk to a baby's airway.
Don't Use Bumper Pads or Sleep Positioners: These products can pose a suffocation risk and are not recommended by the AAP.
Don't Over-bundle Your Baby: Overheating can increase the risk of SIDS. Dress your baby in light, comfortable clothing, and adjust layers based on the room temperature.
Don't Leave Loose Cords or Window Cords Near the Crib: Keep cribs away from windows with blind or curtain cords, and ensure that no loose electrical cords are within reach.
Creating a safe sleep environment for your baby or toddler is essential for their well-being. By following these do's and don'ts, you can help reduce the risk of sleep-related hazards and ensure that your little one enjoys a peaceful, secure night's sleep. As always, consult with your pediatrician for personalized advice on your child's sleep needs.
